Scout wasn't too sure what to feel.
The most prominent emotion had to be excitement though. Tomorrow was Halloween for crying out loud! She'd had to wait an entire year since the last one. It wasn't just the prospect of Halloween that excited her either, Scout's ham costume for the play was finished! Jem told her she looked mighty fine in it and she took that to heart.
Sure he could have just been pulling her leg, but it'd taken a while to get the thing finished. And now that it was finished she would be using it to its fullest extent. Scout might as well have been wearing a barrel every time she put it on but that didn't bother her in the slightest. Why would it?
Alabama, and the South in general, didn't get all that cold. It got hot, sure, but almost never cold. This year things seemed to be turning on their heads however. The temperature had gotten low enough to where Scout couldn't go outside barefoot! Now if there ever was an accomplishment by nature that would be one in her books.
Back to the point though, Scout wasn't sure whether to be excited or bored. Sure tomorrow would hopefully be really fun, but today it was quiet. Like the calm before the storm or whatever that saying was. Jem was busy reading his dumb football magazines, Dill wasn't over just yet, and Miss Madie wasn't outside tending to her flowers neither!
She wouldn't be spending the day indoors, God forbid that day came to pass, so Scout would just have to make do with what she had...which was a pretty nice looking stick she'd found. Maybe she could go and imitate an old person? Hell, maybe even lure Jem outside and smack him with it.
He was bigger and stronger than her now though, which meant he'd probably get back at her pretty good. Not to mention Atticus wouldn't be all that pleased.
The day Scout disappointed Atticus would be her last.
In light of her boredom she let the stick fall to the ground before she started walking, peering up at the grey sky.
"Jesus...when is anythin' interestin' gonna happen?"
A genuine question.
