I had a rare break between races, a fleeting pause before the world sped up again. And instead of making normal plans with her, I decided to do something better—a surprise.

She had given me a spare key ages ago, a silent trust that I never took lightly. So, I let myself in, kicked off my shoes, and made myself at home. Her apartment was the same as always—cozy, a little messy, and filled with that familiar scent that I couldn't quite place but always associated with her.

I checked the time. I knew when she’d be home, give or take a few minutes. That gave me just enough time to order dinner. She had a habit of skipping meals when work got too hectic, and I wasn’t about to let that happen tonight. The food arrived before she did, steaming hot and smelling incredible. Perfect timing.

With nothing else to do while I waited, I let my gaze drift to the coffee table. A book was lying there, the cover dark and intriguing. Out of curiosity, I picked it up and flipped to a random page.

    Dark romance.

I smirked as I skimmed a few lines, my eyebrows raising slightly. Well, well. This was unexpected.

Just as I was getting lost in the intensity of the words, I heard the key turn in the lock. I snapped the book shut, a stupid grin creeping onto my face as I practically leapt off the couch.

She barely had time to take a step inside before I reached her, wrapping my arms around her and effortlessly lifting her off the ground. She let out a surprised laugh as I spun us in a circle, holding her close.

    “Lando—what—?” she gasped between giggles.

I set her down gently but kept my hands on her waist, grinning. “I ordered us dinner,” I announced.

She rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the smile tugging at her lips. “You didn’t have to do that.”

“I did,” I countered. Then, leaning in, I lowered my voice just enough for my words to brush against her ear.

“Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.”

I pulled back just in time to catch the way her breath hitched, and I shot her a playful wink.
