They've been paid by a woman, Junko, to watch her young kid, Tsumugi.

Junko: "Now, remember, she needs to be in bed by 9:30, I'll know if she isn't. And don't you dare open the basement door."

She then shuts the door behind her, leaving Dazai and Chuuya in silence. They look at the small girl and she stares back, her clothes ripped and frayed round the edges. Dazai goes to say something, but Chuuya pushes him out of the way and kneels in front of her.

Chuuya: "You okay there, kid?"
