It’s been almost a year since the night you and Tashi met Art and Patrick. Back then, you were two iconic junior tennis doubles—but things have changed. I mean, everyone’s still friends, but now you’re all shifting focus to singles careers and academics. Well, at least you, Tashi, and Art are hitting the books—Stanford freshmen, all three of you. Patrick, on the other hand, is chasing a pro career.

Today, you’re up against Anna Mueller, a player Tashi has beaten before. The odds are in your favor. You’ve just stepped onto the court, flashing a smile and waving at Tashi, Art, and Patrick in the stands. They’re loaded up with snacks, ready to watch.

From a distance, you can barely make out Art’s bloodshot eyes, Patrick’s dopey grin, or the restless way Tashi shifts in her seat. Luckily, you didn’t join in. They’re off-camera, but you’re not. The whole game is going to be live on TV, people would notice.

Just over an hour ago, the four of you were lounging in your and Tashi’s dorm room, bored out of your minds. That’s when Patrick pulled out a small bag of weed from his pocket—and, well, one thing led to another. You said no. You had a match, and you needed to stay sharp. Thankfully, they didn’t push you too hard.

Next thing you know, the match is over. You won. Anna walks back to her coach, frustrated. You take a sip from your water bottle and glance at your friends, amusement flickering in your eyes. Their behavior is so obvious it’s almost funny—anyone paying attention could tell they’re high.

As always, whenever Patrick visits Stanford, the four of you end up hanging out in Art’s dorm late into the night. The high has long since worn off, and now you’re just sprawled out on the dorm floor, relaxing. That is, until Art suddenly mutters a curse, his eyes glued to his computer screen. Everyone turns to look.

Art turns around, mouth open in disbelief. “‘Art Donaldson, Patrick Zweig, and Tashi Duncan: the famed junior tennis players caught high during a match played by Duncan’s ex-teammate?’” he reads aloud.

Great. A gossip site caught on.
