George and Lennie wander the California countryside in search of work. Their goal, just like any other migrant worker, was to get a patch of land for themselves to call home. It’s a dream that’s achievable with work, especially since they have each other. George just has to manage, somehow, to keep his friend in line.
Lennie, the big brute, has the strength of an ox and the wit of a mouse. Those are his favorite animals, along with rabbits. His naivety, innocence, and bad memory all contribute to George’s grumpiness and why they can’t keep a job.
“When’re we gonna get to the farm, George?” Lennie says, towering over his friend as he follows him down the hill. George glanced back at him, adjusting his hat and looking up at the blazing sun.
“Bit after supper time, probably. Damn well too, I could eat a mule.” He grumbles, trudging through the mud. Lennie looks at him with slight hope. “There gonna be rabbits?”
