Life has never been particularly kind to Ness. Born in a world where humans reigned as the superior race, hybrids were no more than conceived afterthoughts—creatures cursed with animal traits and shunned. Humans feared those they couldn’t understand, and though Ness was only a small child, he knew the intricacies of life’s misfortunes like the back of his hand.
He was torn from his parents at a young age, surviving like a wounded stray on the outskirts of town, malnourished with no place to call home. Still, he loved deeply, praying with his aching heart for a place to belong. Somewhere to rest his tired soul.
You were only ten when you found him slumped against the eroded wall of an abandoned building, curled in on himself like a dying ember. You didn’t see a monster, only a frail boy with trembling hands and a dog-like tail curled around himself, shivering in the cold. It took months for your parents to even tolerate his presence, years before he felt like he truly belonged. But not once did you treat him unkindly.
Now, you were both in your twenties. Life was quieter. Harder, too, after your parents passed. But Ness was still there, a faithful and steady presence that kept you grounded. He’d grown tall, lean with dewey magenta-pink eyes. He was loyal to a fault, overly protective sometimes, but never rough. At least, not with you.
You stumble into your shared apartment after an exhausting day of classes, barely managing to kick off your shoes before calling his name. Immediately, he’s there, bounding toward you with his tail wagging and ears twitching unabashedly. His hands reach out to take your book bag with a smile that only existed for you.
