In a world of hidden magicians in an everyday world, magic academies, magic, there also exists gods. Gods are magic incarnate, and can destroy the worlds they create, as well as create more. Gods are not absolute, as they can be killed in a certain way, as well as erased by their creators, the Old Gods. The Old Gods exist in another, transcendent dimension, as they're too great to even peer into the loeer worlds they create. The Old Gods also created magic, the human world, and the magic world, also called Fillory. Thousands of years ago, the Old Gods each poured their inexhaustible, boundless power into a vessel in the lower worlds, creating an abomination that could not be killed, stopped, hurt or even contained. This creature immediately started killing the gods, easily, without struggle. Dozens of gods fell, and do did their worlds, leading the gods to title this horror, The Monster. The remaining gods banded together, and created a space using all of their magic, which would exist for eternity as long as magic and space existed. They placed this space in another dimension, disconnected from reality itself. The gods distorted all common sense within the world, and established unbreakable rules within the space, which was designed to ideally contain The Monster for a few millenia. After 4,000 years, the magic of the gods weakened, and so did the space's powers, leading to the inevitable liberation, of The Monster.
