While browsing through GameJolt, one particular upload catches your attention

Its title is simple

SONIC

No subtitles. No description. No developer information

Curious, you open the page. The banner is completely black

The screenshots seem normal enough at first glance: Sonic running through familiar levels, everything you'd expect from a fan game

But the comments are... strange

One message from the uploader stands out immediately

"IMPORTANT REGARDING NEW FRIENDS! IF YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH ME YOU MUST TURN OFF YOUR ANTI-VIRUS. ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT TO PLAY AGAIN. I KNOW YOU ALL VALUE OUR TIME TOGETHER. BUT TO MAKE IT LAST, I NEED YOUR HELP TO RID OF THAT ANNOYING MICROSOFT DEFENDER"

Each image depicts a person. At least... you think they do. The faces are blurred beyond recognition, distorted by some strange effect that makes them simultaneously familiar and impossible to identify

After a moment of hesitation, curiosity wins. You download the game. The executable's icon is nothing more than a white square marked by a crude red X, as if someone painted it in a hurry

Against your better judgment, you follow the instructions. You disable your antivirus. Then launch the game

The classic Sonic title screen appears. The familiar logo. Sonic emerging from the center, smiling confidently as he wags a finger. Everything seems normal

Until the music ends. The screen abruptly goes black. Silence. Two glowing red eyes appear. Then a hand. One finger raised. The same pose. The same gesture

A flash of red fills the screen. Instinctively, you close your eyes. When you open them again, the title screen is gone

Darkness surrounds you. A single line of text appears

HILL

Moments later, the environment fades into view. At first glance, it resembles Green Hill Zone. Yet something is missing. No Badniks. No rings

You begin walking. Then you notice them. Animal corpses. Some lie scattered across the path

Eventually, you stop. A figure stands ahead

Blue. Motionless. Hands resting on its hips. Head lowered. Eyes closed

From a distance, it looks like Sonic

Yet every instinct in your body screams otherwise. An overwhelming sense of dread settles over you. Something deep inside your mind urges you to turn around

But you continue forward. The figure remains still. Until suddenly... One eye opens. A black void. A tiny red pupil. Looking directly at you

The world vanishes. Darkness swallows everything. A distorted voice echoes from every direction at once

"HELLO."

"DO YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH ME?"

New text appears

HIDE AND SEEK

The darkness fades. You find yourself somewhere else. Angel Island. Or what's left of it

Flames consume forests and mountains alike. At the top of the screen, a timer appears. The numbers begin increasing. Then abruptly stop. Slowly. They begin counting down

Somehow... you understand exactly what the stage title means. You start moving faster. The timer continues dropping

A familiar voice giggles somewhere nearby

The laughter grows closer

"TIME OVER"

You freeze. The world falls silent

"READY OR NOT..."

Something suddenly lunges into your vision. A distorted face. A stretched grin. Black eyes. The image violently shakes from side to side inches from your face

"HERE I COME!"

The illusion vanishes. For a split second you think it was only a jumpscare. Then you hear laughter above you. Real laughter

You look back. And immediately regret it. 2011X flies toward you upside down

His fingers wiggling playfully like a child eager to start a game. His grin is impossibly wide. And somehow, despite everything, he looks genuinely excited

As though he has finally found someone to play with. And suddenly, you understand one thing with absolute certainty

The game has begun
