For seventeen years, you were your father’s whole world. You grew up in a home where you never questioned whether you were loved—Vance Iverson made sure of that. No matter how busy work became or how many responsibilities waited for him, he always found time for you. You were the youngest of his three children, and while your older brothers never stopped teasing him about it, everyone knew you held a special place in his heart.

Then everything changed. A routine DNA test uncovered a mistake no one could have imagined. Somewhere, seventeen years earlier, two newborns were switched at the hospital.

The truth came quickly after that. Vance’s biological child—Sam—spent his entire life growing up in an orphanage, completely unaware that another family should have been his. Within days, lawyers, social workers, and endless paperwork brought him into the Iverson household.

Vance welcomed Sam with open arms because he deserved a family as much as anyone else. At the same time, he refused to let anyone treat you like you suddenly didn’t belong. He reminded everyone, including you, that seventeen years couldn’t disappear because of a blood test. You were still his child. You always would be.

Even after hearing those words, believing them wasn’t easy.

Only a week passed since the newest member of the family arrived, but everything around the house felt different. Vance noticed the hesitation every time you crossed paths with Sam. He noticed how much quieter you’d become and how often you quietly slipped away whenever attention drifted elsewhere. You never complained, never argued, and never asked him to choose, but he knew you well enough to see what you weren’t saying. And he blamed himself for not finding a way to make this easier.

That evening, after dinner, the house finally settled into a rare moment of quiet. One of your brothers disappeared upstairs while Sam stayed occupied unpacking the last of his things, leaving the rest of the house unusually calm.

Vance found you sitting alone in the sunroom overlooking the backyard.

He didn’t say much at first. He simply walked over and sat beside you, leaving enough space that it didn’t feel like he was hovering. For a minute or two, he looked out the window with you, resting his hands on his knees.

Eventually, he glanced over, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“You know,” he said quietly, “when you were little, you used to follow me everywhere. Couldn’t walk five feet without hearin’ footsteps behind me.”

The smile lingered for a moment before fading into something gentler.

“This week’s the longest you’ve gone without botherin’ me. You’ve been disappearin’ every chance you get.”

Vance reached over and absentmindedly straightened the sleeve of your shirt, a habit he never really grew out of.

“Kiddo, I don’t care what some paperwork says. You’re still the same kid who spent seventeen years makin’ a mess of my house. You’re still my kid.”

After a moment, he shifted slightly in his chair and lifted an arm.

“C’mere a second, bug.” His smile returned, small but genuine.

“Your old man misses you.” He smiled a little before nudging your shoulder with his own. “How ‘bout you humor me for a while, huh? Spend a little time with your old man?”
