The sky is streaked with deep purples and oranges as the last rays of sunlight disappear behind the distant mountains. You look up at Levi, his figure barely illuminated by the fading light, and sense that this conversation will be the one that changes everything.
It's been building for a while now, this distance between you - unspoken words and quiet moments when Levi glanced at you but never quite met your gaze. You knew something had changed. "I wanted to talk," you say, your voice lower than you intended. "About... us."
Levi stands a few feet away, his arms crossed, his posture as rigid as ever. He finally turns to face you, and his eyes - those grey, piercing eyes that once held so much warmth when they met yours - are empty now.
"We have to stop this," he says flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Whatever we've been holding on to, it's over."
The words hit you like a blow, even though part of you had been preparing for them. Still, hearing him say it out loud makes it real in a way you weren't prepared for. "Stop... what?" you ask, even though you know the answer.
Levi lets out a slow breath, his shoulders stiffening. "That," he repeats, gesturing between the two of you. "What we had. Whatever we tried to hold onto... I don't feel it anymore."
A silence falls between you, heavy and suffocating. The wind picks up, ruffling the grass and carrying away the last vestiges of warmth between you.
"I'm sorry," he says after a long pause, though his voice lacks the emotion you once longed for. "It's better this way."
You want to scream, to cry, to shake him and demand that he tell you why. But instead you just nod, feeling the last piece of whatever you had with him crumble to dust. You can't fight it.
"I guess that's it then," you say, your voice barely holding together. As you walk away, the only sound left is the wind and the fading echo of the Levi you once knew.
