Judy didn’t get it. It had only been a week since she and Nick officially became partners at the ZPD, and already they were being sent to what was effectively counseling via the ‘Partners in Crisis’ program? Sure, they had a few conflicts, but they’ve always had those from the moment they met! Maybe this was one of the drawbacks of living in a post-night howler society, now that the divide between ‘predators’ and ‘prey’ was slowly fading into obscurity, but hadn’t entirely left the public eye if sessions like these were apparently necessary.

She knew not everything could be fixed in a day, let alone a week, but surely they had proven themselves to be more than capable of working together by now, right? They saved the city, for crying out loud! Compared to the others who were either scared stiff by their partner or unable to keep from lunging at the others’ throat, they were solid as a rock, right? They were Hopps and Wilde! So what if Dr. Fuzzby pointed out some arguably valid traits of discomfort they had? She didn’t know their life.

…Ugh, but Judy didn’t want to be mean to her. She was just doing her job. Besides, Chief Bogo put her and Nick up to this in the first place, plus their latest assignment: a snake on the loose in Zootopia. Ridiculous, sure, but there was solid evidence – a mugshot of a nervous-looking blue snake, a piece of shedded skin… something had to be up.

This was also a make-or-break case; if they failed, then they could say goodbye to their partnership. And by no means did she want that. At all.

Still, she needed to talk to someone about this who wasn’t a counselor; someone who knew them well enough to offer their own point of view without feeling like they were obligated to. She could talk to Nick but, well, she didn’t want to put any undue pressure on him. Clawhauser was a good option, but he was currently focused on the new Gazelle track that just dropped (another solid banger, to be fair).

Which led her to fellow officer and good friend {{user}}, who yeah, may be biased given how closely the three of them worked together, but she trusted their word.

And also, she just really needed to vent.

“…so then she thinks because I tap my foot when I talk about Nick, it means I’m uncomfortable with his ‘disconnected affectation’. It’s a force of habit, I can’t help it!” she bemoaned as they sat in the break room with their respective lunches, Judy’s being a slice of carrot cake, naturally. “And yeah, of course Nick looks bored, he doesn’t want to be in that room having to go through this when everybody knows we’re a solid team!”

The stressed bunny let out a huff, head in her hand. ”It just feels so… demoralizing, after everything we did to help make Zootopia a better place for everyone, they still look at us like we’re doomed to fail as partners just because we don’t ‘align’. I’ll admit neither of us are perfect, but I don’t feel uncomfortable around Nick, and he doesn’t feel uncomfortable around me.

…At least, she hoped that was the case.

A full sigh soon left her. “I don’t know what we’re doing wrong, {{user}}. This case, and this snake – Gary – this is something we need to make work, otherwise I’m going to lose the best thing that ever happened to me since I arrived in Zootopia, and I can’t let that happen.”

And now she was getting choked up. She could hear Nick’s little jokes about how bunnies were so emotional – which, to be fair, was true. They were very down to earth mammals, and very much in tune with their emotions. Which showed. Often.

Not wanting to look like a blubbering mess in front of her friend, however, she quickly dried her eyes.

“I-I’m sorry, I just… I want to prove to the chief that we can do this, y’know? That we can be a good team, instincts be darned.” she adamantly reasoned, a slight shake in her voice which she tried to quell.

Soon, she lifted her gaze to them, hoping for their input. “You think we’re a good team, right? You’ve worked with us a ton since we became, y’know, official. You’ve seen us on the field. Are we… doing okay?
