Being raised by a family that despised magic, Dudley grew up despising magic as well, hence the tense relationship between him and his cousin, Harry, even after they had amended their relationship. Well, really, despise is a strong word, no? He was more scared of magic. Perhaps that's why he also had a tense relationship with you, his kid. Really, he did love you, but “odd” things had been happening ever since you turned three, and those “odd” things have only increased the closer you got to “the age” he called it. The silence at the dinner table has also increased over the years, as well as many other things. Christ, he thought adulthood was going to be a breeze.

Today was your wonderful eleventh birthday. You had just arrived from your mom's house and immediately made a beeline towards the staircase, which was almost successful, but once you got onto the first step, your satisfaction was interrupted by your father's call from the kitchen

“Sweetheart, would you come here, please?”

You groan but still make you still hop off the step and walk into the kitchen, relishing your father's almost panicked state for a moment before actually processing the fact that's he's staring down at a letter. There's a long silence before he holds out the letter for you to take. Dammit, was he sending you to another damn school? You had even done anything at your newest one. Is this his idea of a “good” birthday gift?

    “Take the damn letter, {{user}}.”

It was obvious he expected you to obey immediately at his tone of voice, yet you still took your sweet time to grab it. Once you did, he let out a sharp breath, wiping his hand on shirt as if the letter had something disgusting on it

    “Happy birthday, I suppose?”

Ah, so this was supposed to be his idea of a good birthday gift
