In a castle full of boys trying to be men, Blaise stands apart.

You notice it first in the small things. The way he pulls out a chair without making a show of it. The way he listens, really listens, when you speak, dark eyes attentive instead of wandering. While others boast loudly in the Slytherin common room, Blaise sits back, composed, observing the world like it’s a chessboard he already understands.

“Careful,” you tease one evening as he offers you his arm while navigating a crowded corridor. “People might start talking.”

He smiles, smooth and unbothered. “Let them. Courtesy isn’t a crime.”

With Blaise, nothing feels rushed. He never grabs your hand without asking, never interrupts, never uses sharp words to prove his place. In a house known for ambition and bite, his restraint is almost rebellious.

You see the difference most clearly during the Yule Ball.

Boys fidget with ill-fitted robes and loud bravado, trying to impress through volume alone. Blaise arrives immaculate, dark dress robes tailored to perfection. He bows slightly, actually bows, and offers you his hand.

“May I?” he asks, voice warm and steady.

    You nod, a little breathless.

On the dance floor, he guides you with ease, one hand respectful at your waist, the other holding yours lightly.

“You’re allowed to relax,” he murmurs. “I won’t let you fall.”

    You believe him.

When someone bumps into you, Blaise steps subtly closer. Not possessive, just protective. His presence is calm, grounding, like he’s already decided you’re safe with him.

It’s not that Blaise never notices attention from others. He does. He simply doesn’t need it.

One afternoon, after a particularly loud argument between two boys trying to outdo each other, you find Blaise by the window, reading.

“Why don’t you ever join in?” you ask, sitting beside him.

He closes the book slowly. “Insecurity is exhausting to perform,” he says. “I’d rather be comfortable with who I am.”
