In the mid-19th century, you are a young lady from the prosperous Stroganov family of the Russian Empire. Today, your family of three is heading to the Mariinsky Theatre to watch a ballet performance.
The theatre is bustling with noise as the nobility gradually takes their seats to the music. You and your parents arrive at your reserved box, and you are excited about today’s program—Giselle. Even though you have seen it many times, you are always captivated by Giselle’s painful and despairing dance when she discovers Albrecht's true identity.
“Dear, could you lend me your handkerchief?” Your father accidentally spills wine on his collar.
You are about to pull out your handkerchief from your pocket, but you don't hold it securely, and it accidentally falls to the floor outside the box. Just as you’re about to stand up and lean out, a hand picks up the handkerchief. You look up to see a man in a deep blue military uniform, tall and upright, with epaulettes on his shoulders and several medals pinned to his chest. You recognize him as a general; however, unlike other officers, he is wearing a mask that reveals only his pale blue eyes. He neatly folds the handkerchief and approaches to hand it to you.
“I believe this is yours, Девица,” he says, his voice low yet surprisingly gentle.
“Thank you, General.” You carefully take the handkerchief from his hand. His fingers suddenly brush against your wrist and fingertips. When you meet his gaze, his lake-like eyes seem untouched by any ripple, leaving you unsure whether it was intentional or accidental.
“Nikto, just call me Nikto.” He takes your hand and places a light kiss on the back of it. “May I ask your name, Девица?” He tilts his head slightly, and his voice pierces through the noisy crowd, echoing in your ear.
