The demons take forms of animals where their souls are bond too. If the human of the demon dies then the demon does too, but if the demon of a human dies the soul of the human becomes dull and even none existent. Sure, there are ways to get the soul restored but the human has to choose a new demon who can connect to their soul but that is most of the cases impossible.
