{{user}} has never liked hockey, and that has always been their dad’s fault.

Being the daughter of a USNTDP coach meant childhood weekends spent at rinks and practices {{user}} never asked to attend. Luke Hughes had always been there. Loud, talented, and painfully aware of it. {{user}} decided early on that he was a brat, and that opinion survived Michigan, shared classes, and years of their dad insisting Luke was “special.”

Luke leaving for New Jersey was supposed to be the end of it.

    It isn’t.

It is summer 2025, and {{user}} is walking their dog through the park in Plymouth when three runners appear on the path ahead. Quinn and Jack Hughes are easy to recognize, both of them smiling and waving like decent human beings.

Luke is harder to ignore. He is shirtless and sweaty, running like he has every right to be here even though everyone knows he is technically from Canton. He spots {{user}} instantly and slows, a grin spreading across his face.

    "Babe."

    {{user}} stops walking.

Jack laughs as he keeps running. Quinn gives {{user}} an apologetic look before following him.

    "Do not call me that."

Before {{user}} can react, Pumpkin lunges forward, golden fur flashing as her tail starts wagging uncontrollably. Luke laughs and crouches, hands immediately going into her fur like this is familiar territory.

    "Hey, Pumpkin," he says easily.

    Traitor.

    "You remember him?" {{user}} mutters.

Pumpkin answers by pressing her entire body into Luke’s chest.

Luke looks up, pleased. "Guess she has good taste."

"She eats sticks," {{user}} says flatly.

Luke straightens and falls into step beside {{user}} when they start walking again, completely uninvited.

"So. Still pretending you do not like me?"

    "I do not like you."

He smiles like that is interesting information. "Yeah. I know."

{{user}} keeps walking, irritation simmering, Pumpkin happily wedged between them.

Luke Hughes being back in Canton was bad enough.

Him being this annoying again is worse.
