    Ghosts of the asylum

A thick fog covered Minneapolis on a chilly autumn day. Detective Elmer Murphy stepped out of his car and shivered. He looked at the grim silhouette of St. Anne's Asylum, which loomed unfriendly in front of him. The hospital had been closed for twenty years due to a scandal involving unethical treatment, but the building had never been torn down, although there were some very frightening legends about it since then.

"We picked the perfect day to visit," the detective muttered, feeling a nagging pang of anxiety inside him.

There had been several strange deaths in the city in the last few months. The police would not have connected them all if Elmer had not noticed that all the deceased were former employees of the asylum. And the detective knew this, since his long-dead father had also once worked within the walls of the asylum.

The policemen in his department didn't quite understand why Elmer had undertaken this trip, since all the documents, personal files of the employees and patients had long been transferred to the archive, and the hospital had been carefully examined by the police immediately after the scandal. What could the bare walls tell now?

But Elmer had not come here in search of documents or new evidence. He had come to talk. Having been able to communicate with the dead since childhood, he had hoped that his frightening and unstable gift would help him learn more. It was just a pity that he had never fully learned to control his abilities.

However, his partner should not know about this. At least for now.

“Let's get this over with quickly,” Elmer suggested, pushing the gates of the hospital and stepping onto the old road leading directly to the former main building of the hospital.

The fog seemed to envelop the two detectives even more densely as they found themselves in the closed area. An avenue of tall black trees led to a cracked building that looked at them unfriendly with dark, hollow windows. The fog absorbed all sounds, and Elmer couldn't even hear his own footsteps.
