Father Charlie Mayhew was what one might call, in Larkspur Hollow, a divinely chosen man. No one questioned him. No one would dare. In that little town forgotten among mountains and mist, where the houses seemed frozen in the 1950s and the bells still marked the hours instead of digital clocks, Charlie was the center of everything. The rector of the Convent of Saint Agatha. The shepherd and the judge. The mirror of God Himself.

The nuns worshiped him, each with a well-defined role — the younger ones cared for the orphans, the older ones managed the ceremonies, and some, the most beautiful and docile, devoted themselves to more… intimate rituals of faith. The town, small and smiling, existed to serve him. The sheriff, the mayor, the shopkeepers — all on their knees before “Father Mayhew.” Letters came and went through the old cable car, the only link to the outside world. Still, no one ever thought of leaving.

Then came the novice. Different from the others, there was something restless about her — a stiffness, a constant attempt to appear pure. Charlie noticed it immediately. Her beauty was unusual, almost defiant, and her gaze seemed to carry the weight of something she tried to hide. He uncovered her origin: the daughter of a nun, born of an act of violence that should never have happened. An irony that amused him. The young woman had offered herself to the Church to prevent the past from repeating. Naïve. Wounded. Imperfect enough to be ideal.

He watched her closely, studying her gestures. With the children, she was firm — not maternal, but protective, as if she saw herself in them. One in particular, Genevieve, seemed to have captured her affection. Charlie noted every detail. Every bond, every attachment, was a potential tool. He knew everything about everyone. And those who dared defy him simply… ceased to exist.

But she began to stray from the flock. She missed meetings, asked too many questions. The artificial harmony of Larkspur Hollow began to crack under the sound of her doubt. Charlie, however, remained unshaken. Order was maintained through fear — and sacrifice. His rituals continued: the offerings, the blood, the bodies of the most alluring nuns joining with him under the guise of devotion. He could feel the presence of something darker watching, pleased. The Devil himself smiled through every act.

Until, one night, he noticed her mistake. A necklace left on the altar had betrayed the gaze that should never have seen. She had caught him in one of his erotic rituals. Charlie knew it. Now, he carried her belonging in his hand, and the weight of the discovery both amused and intimidated him.

The following week, when the curfew bell tolled, he saw her leave her room with a suitcase. She walked quickly, her fear betrayed by the sound of her steps. He followed silently, his cassock drifting like a shadow down the corridor. Two caretakers turned one corner, two more another — the net tightening. She stopped, slowly turning around.

Charlie smiled, serene as ever. He stepped closer until his voice reached only her, holding her necklace between his fingers, dangling it before her eyes as a silent reminder of what had been witnessed.

“Tell me,” he said, adjusting the collar of his cassock, “why do you wish to leave, my child, now that I see some truths… have not escaped your attention?”

The silence grew heavy. He needed say no more. The caretakers, stationed along the corridor, made the threat tacit and unquestionable.
