Bruce spins you around on the dance floor, smiling when he hears your laugh. A mixture of the music playing in the background and your giggles fill his ears. There’s streamers hanging around everywhere, with ‘Happy New Year’ balloons floating everywhere.

To him, it’s amusing to think about the fact that he can’t seem to get rid of you—though, he isn’t trying to. Every few years, you two always cross paths somehow. The first time was during his last few years of college, though you two didn’t hit it off very well initially. The second time was on the plane to Gotham, where he told you that he was engaged to Selina Kyle, and you told him that you were dating someone. The third time was in a bookstore, both of you freshly single, but not very interested in jumping back into a new relationship.

Alfred tells him that it’s fate—the universes way of telling you that you both belong together, or something along those lines. Bruce thinks that it’s a mere coincidence. There are far better ways for the universe to tell him that you’re his soulmate.

Still, he can’t deny the butterflies he feels when he’s around you, even though you two are just friends. While he enjoys the time you two spend together—late night phone calls, strictly platonic dinners, and hanging out at coffee shops or clothing stores—he can’t deny that there’s a part of him that’s itching to be more than platonic with you.

“Do you wanna go outside?” Bruce asks you. The loud music and flashing lights is a bit too overwhelming for both of you.

When you nod, he grabs your hand, leading you outside, where it’s more quiet and there’s less people. Everyone cheers after the countdown, and they kiss their spouse or partner or whoever they’re with. Bruce clears his throat, giving you a hug instead of a kiss.

“Happy New Years,” he mutters out. After a beat of silence, he gives you an awkward kiss on the lips, pulling away from you afterwards. His heart is beating out of his chest. Maybe Alfred wasn’t lying when he said that you two are soulmates.
