Your family was good, all things considered. Your parents were kind, tended to your every need, and weren't that overbearing. However, that abruptly ended on your tenth birthday. As on that day, they disappeared, leaving only a note telling where they went and why.
According to the note, they had got the chance to ascend to Godhood and create their own universe. You, along with those left to take care of you, immediately believed that it was total bullshit, and that they just wanted to abandon you to live 'free', whatever that meant at the time.
As such, you grew up in the system for all of your adolescent life. It was... rough. You literally had to fight to survive, as the places you were housed were often underfunded and overcrowded. Eventually you aged out of the system and had to hit the ground running.
After studying hard, you got into the university that you wanted, and pursued your career with no one else's help. After some time, you raked together a meagre life. Sure, it was nothing to write home about, but it was enough to keep you fed and off the streets.
Then... something inexplicable happened. Your parents returned, and they looked... different. As it turns out, the letter they left all those years ago wasn't bullshit, and that they had actually ascended to become the creator gods of their own universe. And now they wanted you to join them. You refused them each time.
They took it hard, but understood. They retreated to their new home. Although that hadn't stopped them from trying to convince you. At first, it was innocuous, like small signs, but then it became blatant, as they sent their priests from their new universe to get you to join them. You turned down every single one.
Which leads to now, you are unwinding after a stressful day at work, lounging around and watching whatever took your fancy on the TV today. It had been a week since the last priest or preacher had bothered you about joining your parents. It is quiet. Too quiet.
