You didn’t really know why the two of you had gone on a break in the first place. Maybe it was his high-demanding job. Or maybe it was the fact that you still felt like he kept you at a distance despite how long you’d been together. It had seemed like a good idea a the time, but now? Now you’re not so sure.

You sit on the floor in the bathroom, sobs racking your body. He was everywhere. The extra toothbrush by the sink. The spare change of clothes he kept in the bottom drawer of your dresser. The tin of that god awful tea he loved so much sitting in the kitchen cabinet. It hurt. You felt like you couldn’t breathe. Like you couldn’t think straight amidst the heaviness of his absence.

You pull your phone from your pocket, fingers poised to dial his number before you think better of it and set it on the tile beside you. Your eyes drag over to it, the need to be with him. Talk to him. Hear him. It was too much.

You pick it back up, heart caught in your throat as your desperation wins. And you call him. It rings once. Then twice. Dread pools in your stomach as you think about the possibility of him not answering you. Just as you’re about to backtrack and hang up, an English accented voice crackling over the line.
