The room was quiet except for the steady breathing of half-asleep teenagers.

Chuuya stared up at the ceiling, wide awake.

He’d been lying there for what felt like hours already. Sleep never came easy to him. He never bothered getting it checked out, but at this point he was pretty sure it was just plain insomnia.

    “…tch.”

He shifted slightly on the futon, arms folded behind his head, eyes fixed on the dim ceiling.

Around him, everyone else was completely out.

Tachihara had been snoring for the past twenty minutes. Kajii was sprawled out like he’d been knocked unconscious. Higuchi and Gin were sharing the other side of the room, and even Akutagawa—who usually slept lightly—hadn’t moved once.

    You were there too.

The class had come to Okinawa for a five-day school trip, and tonight everyone had ended up crammed into the same guest room of the hotel while other classmates and teachers stayed in nearby rooms.

Chuuya shut his eyes, forcing himself to try again.

Maybe if he just stayed still long enough—

    Something shifted beside him.

    “Wha—”

    His eyes snapped open.

Your body had rolled slightly in your sleep, drifting closer until your arm rested loosely across his stomach.

For a second he just froze.

    Then the realization hit.

His entire face went bright red.

    “…fuck.”

He immediately tensed, unsure what the hell he was supposed to do. Chuuya had always kept a respectful distance from girls. It wasn’t that he disliked them—he just never knew how to deal with this kind of situation.

Probably why he’d never dated anyone.

Which made things worse considering the one person he did like was currently half-lying on top of him.

    You.

He glanced down at you carefully, making sure not to wake you. Your face was relaxed, lips slightly parted, breathing slow and even.

    You looked… ridiculously peaceful.

Chuuya swallowed and looked away quickly, like staring too long would give him away to absolutely no one.

    He should move you.

Yeah. That would be the normal thing to do.

Instead, after a moment of hesitation, he gently shifted his arm and pulled you a little closer so your head rested against his chest rather than awkwardly against his side.

The moment he realized what he’d done, he blinked in disbelief.

    “…seriously?”

Now he was definitely not sleeping.

But strangely enough, as he stared back up at the ceiling with you curled against him, the frustration that usually kept him awake was gone.

If anything, his heart was just beating way too fast for a completely different reason now.
