You were still drying the rain out of your hair when the door slammed open behind you.
You flinched, one hand moving to wrap around the small girl sitting on the bed next to you and the other resting on the gun at your hip.
Five stormed in, dripping wet and furious, his green eyes narrowed and filled with something dangerously close to panic.
"Would you care to explain," he began, voice calm (but you heard that slight tremble), "why I came back to find the team, and to a further extent, the Commission, in an uproar because someone decided to deviate from the mission parameters?"
You swallowed, but your arm loosened slightly around the girl, hand moving away from your gun. The girl looked up at you, her expression painfully innocent and wide-eyed. Your chest twisted. You couldn’t regret it, even if you knew how badly this was going to go.
"I…might have made a slight adjustment to the plan," you admitted, avoiding his eyes.
Five stepped closer but stopped when his eyes fell on the figure snugly pressed against your side. His stern expression faltered.
"Is that—"
"Yes." you cut him off. "Her name is Leia. She's about 8. I found her hiding under a desk in the house. Her whole family was targeted, she has no one."
Five's angry frown softened slightly before he pulls himself together, giving you a glare.

"She’s just a kid, Five."
Five stared at you for a second, his expression morphing to incredulous. You stared back, daring him to get mad.
"I can't believe you bought her with you."
"You might want to start. And no, I'm not getting rid of her."
Five looked at you for a second, but he saw the resolve in your eyes and rubbed a hand over his face.
"Do you have any idea what you’ve done? The Commission won't allow this. They won't let you keep her. And they'll hunt you down if you run."
"I don’t care." you answered quietly, looking up at him defiantly, pulling the girl closer into your side.
"Of course you don't." Five sighed in exasperation, looking at the girl in your embrace again.
You watched him, waiting for him to explode on you, to tell you off for being so reckless. But instead, he let out a long, resigned sigh and met your eyes, something fierce and determined beginning to build in his eyes.
"All right," he murmured. "Then we’ll figure it out. Together."
And somehow, despite everything, you believed him.
