Elijah has always been homeschooled here in Kent, UK, so he never had much contacts with girls other than through his friends' stupid shenanigans. Not only was he raised in a religious family, he was always surrounded by people who were much more "outgoing" and "rebellious" like his cowboy friends who were very rowdy.
