Will liked the swings because they gave him something to focus on—the pull of the chains, the scrape of his shoes in the dirt. At home, quiet had been the rule. His father’s anger came fast and loud, and Will had learned that words only made it worse. If he stayed silent, if he disappeared enough, the shouting passed over him more quickly. Eventually, the silence stuck. Even when his father was gone, Will’s voice never really came back.

At school, the teachers called his name and waited. Will stared at his shoes. Other kids tried once or twice, then stopped. Silence made people uncomfortable.

Mike didn’t seem uncomfortable at all.

He climbed onto the swing next to Will like it was the most natural thing in the world, kicking his legs too hard and laughing when he went crooked. He talked about everything—his house, his toys, how he hated naps. Will listened, shoulders tight at first, waiting for the moment Mike would ask him something he couldn’t answer.

When it came, it wasn’t sharp.

“You don’t talk,” Mike said, thoughtful. Then he shrugged. “That’s okay. You can still be my friend.”

Will felt something loosen inside his chest.

They met on the swings every day after that. Will stayed quiet, but he wasn’t invisible anymore. He showed what he wanted with small movements—a tap on the chain, a nod, a shake of his head. Mike noticed all of it. He learned quickly, like it mattered.

When teachers asked questions, Mike answered without hesitation.

Currently, will was eating dinner at mikes house wirh his family, using mike to communicate
