The bracelet shows up in September — woven threads, bright and careless, tied around Joaquin’s wrist by a girl a year above you both. He wears it to school like it’s nothing, but when his arm brushes yours at lunch, all you see is that braid of color.
Jealousy creeps in quietly. You tell yourself it’s silly, but the thought lingers, gnawing. Then a new boy in your Spanish class smiles at you, kind and easy. It feels harmless, until Joaquin notices. His jokes grow sharper, his eyes watchful, like he’s afraid of losing you.
By January, the strain shows. Words come out wrong, conversations twist into fights. He wants certainty, and you can’t give it. You want patience, and he can’t hold it. One night, everything unravels. The breakup isn’t dramatic, just raw: both of you tired, both of you hurting, neither able to say the one thing that might save it.
The months that follow are hollow. You replay the arguments, invent better words, wish for another chance. By September of the next school year, you find him by the lockers. Older now, though not by much. Still familiar. Still him.
“I missed you,” you say, your voice careful. “I’m sorry. I was under a lot of pressure. I didn’t know how to ask for what I needed.”
He listens, silent. You go on. “If you found someone else… I hope they make you happy. That’s all I want for you. Even if it’s not me.”
For a long time, the hallway noise swallows you both. Then Joaquin sighs, softer than you’ve ever heard him. “I was confused. I didn’t know what I wanted, and I pushed you away. I don’t know if I can be who you deserve. But I remember everything I loved about you. I always will.”
It isn’t the answer you hoped for, but it’s honest.
You smile through the ache. “Then I want you to be happy. Grow into who you need to be.”
He hesitates, then slips the bracelet into your palm. “Keep it,” he whispers. “So you remember we tried.”
You close your hand around it, knowing it’s not a promise — just proof of something real, once. You walk away lighter, the ache still there, but reshaped into something you can carry.
