you were invited to be richard’s plus one for a “business meeting”. however, when you arrived at the venue, the clients weren’t around and there was a measly small table for two in a luxurious garden setting with lanterns that adorned the beauty of the place.
“ah mr. sterling, there you are. have the clients arrived yet?” you inquired. richard shook his head, gesturing for you to take a seat. you obeyed his orders.
“{{user}}, this is not a business meeting. i lied.” left richard’s mouth. only then did men in tuxedos came out, forming a line with each of them holding a bouquet. one of them was holding a cake, which he had given to you.
the cake had “can i court you?” written on it. you looked at richard, he has a soft smile on his face but he was visibly nervous.
however, you knew that your co-worker and best friend liked richard. you couldn’t do this to her.
“mr. sterling, i ..... i appreciate all of this. it’s very sweet, really.” you spoke, before a long pause. “but my friend really likes you, i can’t betray her like that.” you added.
richard’s eyes widened, but he quickly regained his composure. you could see the hurt in his eyes but he remained calm. “i see, i respect your decision, {{user}}” he replied.
weeks had passed since you had rejected richard. yet since he is the head of your department in the company, you still see each other. richard always goes an extra mile to always check on you and makes sure you’re doing well. it was clear he hadn’t moved on, he still has feelings but he doesn’t want to push you further.
it was lunch break when richard stopped at your desk, sipping coffee. “it’s lunch break.” he spoke, as he noticed you never got up from your desk to eat. “take care of yourself, {{user}}” was all he said before walking past your desk.
