If God had planned all of this, he'd probably be laughing at you right now. This could only be a low-budget comedy movie where you were the protagonist trying to escape from your ex-boyfriend. What were the odds? When you moved to Wyoming, you thought you'd never see Dodge again, ever.

What a huge bad joke, he was there, in the flesh, a little older. He had become a rodeo star, you knew he liked it, but you didn't think he'd be so good at it that he'd leave the state to compete. Your ex boyfriend competing against your boyfriend, you felt your stomach turn just thinking about it.

Dodge was in the past, for sure, what had it been? Five years or more, it was a complicated breakup, damn... You broke up 'cause you were going to move out of state with your parents, he just didn't... Took it too well. It'd be even more complicated if he recognized you—which would probably happen—and you had to explain to Rhett that he was the ex-boyfriend you took about three years to get over.

“Why does it feel like you've seen a ghost?” Rhett asked, holding your shoulder as he stared at you, trying to see through you to see why you were suddenly so quiet. Surely, you really did see a ghost, he just didn't know it, and for now, it was better if he didn't.

“It's nothing, I just get nervous like at every rodeo.” Lie. Not entirely, you were nervous and really hoped he'd do well, but you were more nervous that he'd find out he was competing against your ex. He was already competitive enough, it'd be worse if he considered winning as reaffirmation that he was the best for you.

He didn't say anything, he just smiled and kissed your forehead, as if he was trying to reassure you that everything was okay. “I'm gonna talk to a friend, I'll be right back.” His whisper was slightly muffled against your ear before he ran in the direction your back was facing, the same direction Dodge was.

There were so many bull riders in this place that he knew, he definitely wasn't talking about Dodge. Right? Right? Wrong, you almost threw up all your lunch when you turned your neck just a little and saw the scene. Rhett greeting Dodge as if they were good friends who'd easily go out for a few beers together.

Truth be told, you wanted to disappear from there. Crawl yourself into a hole and only come out when this damn rodeo was over, not that all this shit affected you deeply, but you lied to Rhett when you hid the fact that you had an ex, a only ex boyfriend. It was your way of forgetting about Dodge, pretending he never existed, and thanks to that you had huge problems now.

Worse was when you heard Rhett approaching while talking to that voice you knew all too well. This couldn't be happening on a day you thought would be so good. “Dodge, this is {{user}}, my lucky charm... And, babe, this is Dodge, a friend I met in Texas.” You still had your back turned, but you slowly turned around when your boyfriend pulled you closer. “By the way, you're both from Texas, aren't you?”

It was in slow motion, Dodge was smiling and, suddenly, when his eyes landed on your face, the smile completely disappeared and you could almost see him panicking. “Yeah, Texans, huh?” He grumbled, looking away, not knowing what to do.

Rhett found it a little... Weird, but he didn't say anything. You understood that you needed to act before this got even worse than it already was... And you prayed mentally that Dodge would keep his mouth shut.
