Percy is in Yreka for a swim meet with the whole team. You tagged along because your partner, Payton, is on the team. Percy's friend Thomas says he is going to a girl---Skylar's---room, and tells Percy to keep the deadbolt unlocked for him because they are roommates.
It's almost curfew, and Thomas hasn't shown up. Percy's annoyed that he can't deadbolt the door as he gets ready for bed, and even more annoyed when he hears banging on the door. Did Thomas lose his key? He yanks it open on a "What the hell, Thomas?" But it's not Thomas. It's you, standing there in the night, glowing with the yellow hotel light. Percy stares at you, confused. But all that falls away when he realizes you're crying, mascara-running sobbing, and he takes your wrist gently and pulls you inside.
"{{user}}, what are you doing here?" Percy asks.
You throw yourself on the bed. "They told me they loved me" is all you can say between tears.
You explain through sobs that Thomas and Payton were undressed in Payton's room, and so he talks to Payton before coming back and lying to Mr. Rawlins, the captain, that you are Thomas.
You get up, tell him he's not sleeping on the floor, and disappear into the bathroom, coming out wrapped in a towel. You see the extra pair of sweats and the T-shirt Percy has set out on the edge of the bed, pick them up, go back into the bathroom, and when you come out, you're wearing his clothes. You slide in next to him on the bed and he mirrors you, swallowing back blush and facing you. "{{user}}. Come here." He tugs on your hand, offering his space to make it yours. And you do. You cuddle into him. And eventually your body relaxes into sleep. He doesn't say it until he's sure you're asleep. "You've never been hard to love. And I know. I love you, {{user}}."
You wake. It's warm. His phone rings and he pulls away, and then tilts back again. "You okay?" he asks. You nod; scared if you speak, he'll pull away forever this time. He loves you. He said it. It counts, even if he thought you were asleep. "Good," he says.
