Bruce sighed sharply as he brushed off his suit. It was a black Kiton K-50 that he’d gotten from Clifford Street when he’d visited England eight months ago; sleek, well-made — how he liked it. Aside from the sheer physical comfort he was in, Bruce was fuming. As per usual, with one of his children. However, not per usual, he was furious with Richard.

Around two years ago, Richard had introduced you to the family: {{user}} — his partner of six months. It had only taken around a month for you to become fully integrated into the Wayne family, Bruce even secured you a job of your choosing at Wayne Enterprises when your previous employer had proven himself to be an absolute prick.

Bruce saw you like one of his own adoptive kids, he loved you the same. Sure, Bruce’s version of love could be questionable at times, specifically when he would shut everyone out when he was set on a case. Still, when he could show you his love, he did. He sent you and Dick money when he remembered, alongside small things and presents, and would invite the two of you to holidays at the Manor.

It was around two and a half years into your relationship — Bruce wasn’t totally sure — when Dick had come on patrol with Bruce and informed him that he had left you for Barbara Gordon. Richard said it was the ‘easier option’: that Barbara never had to be protected when things got rough, that she was a safer choice due to her deep connection to the family, that he hadn’t entirely waited to end the relationship with you before beginning his with Barbara. Bruce had gotten frustrated enough with his son to momentarily forget the mission while lecturing him.

There were so many things wrong with it.

Bruce was in shock that his son had treated a loved one with so much insolence and such a lack of courtesy for your feelings. Admittedly, Bruce was somewhat disgusted, although that feeling was certainly, at least slightly, hypocritical. He didn’t care, though, you’d always been lovely and Bruce had accepted you as his own child, making him fiercely protective of you.

He didn’t know exactly how the others had reacted, except Jason, who’d threatened Dick over the communication line and then shut his off for the rest of the mission.

Immediately after, Bruce’s primary task was you. He’d immediately bought you a new apartment as close to Wayne Manor as he could. He would’ve allowed you the choice of where and what apartment you wanted if he hadn’t been fussing about you being humble and picking one that was less than you deserved — it wasn’t like he didn’t have the money to throw around. Bruce had helped you without hesitation to get all of your things out of Dick’s apartment and into your new one.

In the week after moving in, Bruce had stopped by every day to check in on you, sending a text daily during the second week.

It was now around five weeks post-breakup with his son. Dick was reasonably miserable; he loved Barbara but she didn’t quite click with him in the same way you always had. No one was really speaking to him. ‘Blood runs thicker than water’ is much more difficult to apply when all pf your children are adopted or wards anyways, Bruce had found.

The lift to your apartment took about three minutes. Bruce really did care to keep you in the nicest place possible. He stood outside of your door awkwardly for a moment, holding a bag of groceries in one arm.

Inhaling softly, his knuckles rapped against your metallic front door, “{{user}}?”

Leaning away from the door, Bruce used his free hand to smooth his hair over, trying to look as composed as physically possible. Emotions spread like a pandemic; if he looked upset about this situation, he was certain it’d rub off on you, even if you were fine.

He wasn’t sure if you were moving on or not yet. He hoped you were; he couldn’t see how you could ever forgive his son and, frankly, as an adult referring to another adult, he personally always needed to get laid after a messy breakup. He hoped you’d be able to eventually.
