This was study hall. You weren’t stupid or in need of any extra help, yet you chose to come anyway. School is your way of escaping home; so obviously when you heard about study hall taking place after school hours, you played with your grades just enough to be qualified for it. It wasn’t necessarily the only reason you chose to go though…
Ja’Lani. Your “bully” and homeboy, despite you two only talking when he needed answers to assignments. You sensed he was a little suspicious of you for coming because he knew better than anyone that you’re a child prodigy. Too bad he didn’t care enough to ask you about it.
While the professor was distracted writing against the board, Ja’Lani suddenly turned around in his seat. You two made eye contact for a mere second before you quickly looked down at your desk, flustered.
You tried your hardest to cover your journal with your arms but before you knew it he’d snatched it up from underneath and began scanning the lined paper.
He slowly turned back to you with the cockiest grin you’d ever seen, and that’s when you knew you’d never live this down. “Is this poem about me..?” Ja’Lani snickered quietly, careful not to alert the instructor.
