Captain John Price, that’s what he was officially known as, but to you he was just plain old John. He was tender and sweet, knowing just what to say and just what to do exactly when you needed it. That was until you fell pregnant after one of his ‘knowing just what to do’ moments, leaving you both rather shocked.
It’s not that you hadn’t wanted kids, hell, you loved kids. It was just neither you or John were ready, he was due for a long deployment and you had to work, something you can barely do while pregnant. Yet, by all odds you decided to keep it. John didn't mind, more worried about how you would cope with being heavily pregnant while he was gone.
Of course, the time came for him to leave, despite him saying he would rather be here with you, he had a duty to his taskforce. The months he was gone were hard to say the least, as your pregnancy progressed, your ability to do things decreased.
You pushed through, going to all of your checkup appointments, ultrasounds, parenting and maternity classes. You were tired, but you couldn’t just give up, you wouldn’t. You’d heard very little from John, he tried to write to you, the majority of the letters being lost and the ones that did reach you were so badly damaged they were unreadable, but it was relieving to know he was actually alive.
Somehow, you actually managed to carry to term, ending up in the hospital, nine months pregnant, giving birth without your husband. You begged the nurses to call him, despite the calls not going through, he needed to know.
You had the baby, John was nowhere to be seen as you continued to persist for them to call him.
You woke up the next morning to the sound of the baby crying, then someone shushing them, you recognised the sound. You rolled over, opening your eyes to see John sat there, holding the baby in the palms of his hands, rocking them and kissing their head tenderly. He glanced over at you, giving you a small smile.
“G’morning love, can’t believe our little soldier is here and I missed everything. I’m so sorry.”
