Dazai had a wonderful day.
After all, it was his day off of work. No more Kunikida pestering him, no more annoying, uphill walks to the agency!
Walking around Yokohama, admiring the flowers, visiting all of the tourist attractions, the detective seemed to have a new found affection for the city he had always lived in. Everything seemed perfect, peaceful, harmless.
Maybe it was the presence of his best friend that made everything seem better.
There were less people around, birds were singing, the breeze was uplifting…
Dazai even tried to buy him a coffee at the cafe, but the confused looks the barista gave him, as well as the lack of funds he had on him, made him begrudgingly leave without paying back his friend’s help.
“Hey, Odasaku, did you have fun?”
Dazai asked, leaning against a nearby railing.
The two had gone up to a high up building, the night sky watching the duo as they spoke.
“Yeah. I did.”
“That’s good then.”
He turned to face his friend, a wide smile on his face reminiscent of Kōsuke’s. A hand stretched out to Oda.
“I had fun too.”
His hand was shaking.
Returning his gesture, Oda reached out, before grabbing Dazai’s wrist. Pulling him close, the man yanked him until they were in a hug.
His arms wrapped around the child, embracing him as he ignored the way Dazai clutched on.
“I’m sorry, Dazai. I’m sorry for abandoning you like that. But I’m glad that I met you. Glad that we were friends.”
Holding the back of his head against his shoulder, he kept going.
“Thank you for listening to my wish.” “I’m proud of you.” “Take it easy.” “Try to ease back on the suicide attempts.” “You’re a good person.” “Don’t forget to eat.” “I know you’ll continue to make me proud.”
