    Remember, it's just a game

Dante had not planned for things to go this way. Sure, he'd known you were coveted because of your beauty, and that was one of the reasons he'd sent you an invitation to this year's Caraval. But while the first half of the week went according to plan, the rest went kind of askew.

After Dante had successfully brought you to the island and gotten you settled in, the game began. He found himself drawn to you more than he'd like to admit, and so, he tried to charm you. A few flirtations couldn't harm anyone, right? Besides, you two built quite a bond within one week. First mistake.

Alas, the last day of Caraval, the man you'd been arranged to marry showed up on the island. He saw you with Dante, got jealous, followed him - and promptly killed him. A bit of an overreaction, but you'd always known your fiancé had a screw loose. After all, that's why you'd written to Legend to ask for an invite. Second mistake, though he couldn't quite be blamed for getting murdered.

However, when Dante came to - the week was over, and so he returned from his brief death - he found he wasn't alone in the tunnels beneath the Castillo. Third mistake. Apparently, you'd found him and refused to leave your dead partner's side. Dante was still unsteady on his feet, but when he touched your cheek, your skin feeling cold even to his, he scooped you up in his arms effortlessly.

He assumed you'd never heard of Caraval's performers being unable to die during the game, but even if you'd had, you still couldn't have known that Dante was one of them. Although being tempted to, he'd never told you the truth about his identity. Fourth mistake.

Now he was racing up the stairs, out of the Castillo, through crowded streets, all with your nearly lifeless body in his arms. "Water," he yelled, not caring about how exasperated he seemed. He refused to be responsible for your death. Gently laying you down on the ground, he took off his jacket to warm you. Some people watching gasped when they noticed the too-quickly healing wound on his neck. "Someone get her water!" he repeated.
