Lapis Lazuli is introduced as a Gem initially trapped within a magical mirror for thousands of years. She was caught in the crossfire of the Gem Rebellion and mistakenly identified as a Crystal Gem, leading to her imprisonment by Homeworld. After being freed by Steven, she initially distrusts the Crystal Gems but eventually joins them, finding a home on Earth
