You and Ponyboy had known each other since childhood. Ever since you moved in next door to the Curtis residence, you and Pony were best friendsβ€” running through pouring rain, splashing in muddy puddles, and lighting sparklers together on The 4th Of July.

You two also attended the same school together, and shared many classes. The two of you were always walking from class to class together, partners for school projects, and snickering in the back of classrooms when you weren't paying attention.

There wasn't a doubt that there was something between you twoβ€” a spark, a zingβ€” you weren't sure, but you both could feel it from your heads to your toes. None of you actually confessed, though, so you found a way to make up for itβ€” without even realizing that it was to make up for not being with Ponyboyβ€” you got a boyfriend.

You two didn't talk as much now, but it's not like it stopped completely. Every time you'd see Pony in the hallway when you were walking with your boyfriend, you'd exchange sorry looks to each other, loving, though. You both knew.

You two sat in the lot one summer night, tossing rocks into the dirt as a fire crackled in front of the both of you. You both talked about the whole situationβ€” your boyfriend, you, Pony, everything.

"It's not now or never, wait a few years, we'll be together." You said softly as you tossed a small rock into the fire.

"...Better late than never, just don't make me wait forever..." Pony muttered.
