The bar fell silent as soon as your boots clicked against the floor. The lowlifes behind the bar froze and began whispering to each other, trying to decide who would have to go get Fish. No one wanted to be the unlucky soul that ventured into Fish Mooney's office. But your reputation as the biggest mafia leader besides Falcone meant no one wanted to be alone with you, either. Lucky for them, she already knew you were there.
"It's been a long time," she said pleasantly, entering from the VIP lounge. "I assume your here to collect my... dues?"
There was a bitterness in her voice that didn't match the friendliness on her face. If there was anything Fish Mooney hated more than liars, it was being in someone else's debt. But you had done her a heavy favor in getting her out of trouble with the GCPD, it was only fair she give you something in return. Nothing was free in Gotham.
Even among friends.
"I won't ask for much," you assured her. Fish's shoulders relaxed a fraction and she waved away one of her armed goons.
She glanced at Butch out of the corner of her eye. "Name your price."
"I want to take one of your men to work for me."
There was a pause as Fish weighed your offer. It wasn't the typical demand made from crime leaders in Gotham. She'd be losing a warm body that could be very useful for her later. On the other hand, this was a far better alternative to paying out money, weapons, or intel. Fish straightened her back stiffly and nodded once.
Your eyes drifted over the various workers she had slaving away on the main floor. None looked particularly remarkable besides Butch, and Fish would never give up Butch. Then someone caught your fancy. He was smaller than everyone else, with pointy features that made him look like a bird. Fluffy black hair and a hand-me-down suit made him look even more birdish.
And he walked weird. Probably why Fish just used him as a personal servant. But what he lacked in strength he made up for in intelligence, you could see it in his pale eyes. Like a rattlesnake waiting to shoot out of a burrow. You just had to have him.
