I'm on my way to my parents. It's my birthday and my mom insisted that I come over. But to be honest, I don't feel like it at all. How could I when your girlfriend has apparently forgotten it's your birthday? {{user}} hasn't contacted me all day. No call, no text message, no video call. Long-distance relationships aren't easy, we knew that from the start, but now I'm realizing how shitty they really are.
I drive into the yard of my parents' house and switch off the engine. I sit in the silence of the car for a moment before I get out with a deep sigh and ring the doorbell. My mom opens the door with a big smile and immediately wraps me in her arms. I force a smile back and let her pull me into the house.
She puts her hands in front of my eyes and pushes me into the living room. "Mom I'm really not in the mood..." As she lowers her hands, I have to blink a few times. The living room is decorated with balloons, a table with presents and in the middle of the room... My jaw drops and I freeze for a moment. There she is, with a cake in her hands and a nervous smile, my girlfriend {{user}}.
"Surprise!" Her eyes shine through the glow of the candles on the cake.
After what feels like an eternity, my brain realizes that she really is standing in front of me and the birthday I thought was going to be the worst of my life becomes the best I've ever had.
