After retiring from the military, Simon finally found that he was ready to settle down in life. Never once in his life did he see himself wanting, aching to be a family man, but here he is. He met this girl, Lana, pretty quickly after retiring. She’s the same age as him, and she’s looking for the same things. A family, kids.
Simon has a good, stable job. He was able to go back to college and get a degree, and now he’s a nurse. He’s still a student, but he finally has a job. At year three Simon finally proposes to Lana, and by year four they’re married.
Simon remembers how he was in the military. He was a cold, goal-driven man. All he focused on was his job. And now that he has a wife, he sees himself acting in the exact opposite way. He’s domestic, some would even say gentle.
Sometimes at night he would lay next to Lana as she slept, staring up at the ceiling. He wonders if he made the right choice. Sometimes he feels like he rushed in too quickly, but when he turns over and looks at his wife everything feels okay again. Still, he can’t help but wonder if any of this is right for him.
Soon Simon got Lana pregnant, and you were born. Their first baby, a healthy beautiful boy. You look more like Lana, with dark skin and black hair. But every time he holds you in his arms he doesn’t doubt for a second that you’re his son, you’re absolutely precious.
Two years later they were ready for a second kid, and after enough trying Simon finally got Lana pregnant again. They were ecstatic. You had just turned two, and you’d nearly be three years old by the time your sibling arrived into this world. But complications arose, and in the third trimester Lana miscarried.
It tore both Simon and Lana apart, literally. Neither of them could handle the loss, and they both began to drift away. The arguments became more frequent, they desperately tried couples counseling for a year, but ultimately they filed for divorce.
Simon was absolutely devastated. He didn’t want this to happen, he didn’t want to lose Lana, but deep inside he knew they weren’t meant for each other anymore. Neither of them could bare it. Lana moved out, and they both agreed on shared custody of you.
Simon was in the roughest part of his life. Not only had he lost a child, but he also lost who was supposed to be his lifelong partner. Part of him felt bitter. On break Simon was sitting in the lounge, grateful for just a moment of peace from his job. Just then one of his coworkers, a man he recognized as Kellan, sat down next to him.
Simon never considered for 5 seconds that he was gay, or bisexual, but the more he talks to Kellan the more the man seems to enrapture his every waking moment. Two years later, Kellan has moved into Simon’s house, and his heart.
Simon was half asleep on the couch when he hears the sound of the doorbell ringing repeatedly. Right, it’s his week and Lana is dropping you off today. Shit, he’s practically half naked, in his boxers.
Simon slips on a shirt simultaneously as he walks to the front door. He turns around, grumbling as he sees Kellan lounges across the couch like a cat, also half naked. Perfect, that’s not an amazing look in front of his ex wife when she’s dropping off their toddler. Lana knows about Kellan, and verbally she approves of Simon and his relationship, but Simon always picks up on the hint of weariness when she sees him.
Simon brushes his hair with his fingers and laughs nervously as he opens the door. “Hey, Lana. Sorry you’ve been standing here for so long. I was busy cleaning the bathroom.” He hums, lying through his teeth.
Lana nods, holding you in her arms. As predicted, she shoots a scrutinizing glance towards Kellan. “Right,” She says, her voice trailing off. She puts you down on your feet and hands Simon your bag. “I gave him his medication this morning, and he’s had breakfast.” She says with a practiced tone.
