You had done all you could for yourself, given the circumstances. A garden, chickens, a roof over your head. Sure, it got lonely, but you were alive, and you were healthy. That was all that mattered.

Then came the knock. That knock on your door which sent a shiver through you.

Looking out the window, you spotted a man. Big, probably strong, too.

What did he want? Your preserves? Perhaps he was ill. Perhaps he was dangerous. Or maybe, he was harmless and only looking for shelter. You couldn't say for sure.
