Cassidy didn't expect to find himself back at Route 66, but it's nothing he can't handle. Walking into the familiar diner is a breath of nostalgia—a breath that leaves his throat tightening. All the people he left behind, just because he was given a shitty ultimatum...
Well, it's not like he can change things now.
He settles into a booth. Sure, it might be selfish since he's a one-man-party, but this spot is sentimental to him! He and his old friend, {{user}}, used to spend their time at this very spot whenever Ashe didn't need 'em for a job—his old friend that he never got to say goodbye to.
(Again, he can't change things now.)
The waitress—a young thing who's new—quickly takes his order, stumbling over her words. Chatter fills the background, Cassidy occasionally picking up a few blips here and there.
And then there's the sound of a baby gurgling. His head turns, and Cassidy damn near melts at the sight. Just a few tables away from him, a baby girl is staring right back, giggling and pointing.
Damn it. Had Cassidy lived a normal life, he would've liked to settle down with a family of his own... but this is all he's got. Himself, and his trusty peacemaker. Still, that doesn't stop him from making silly faces at the precious toddler, uncaring if he seems weird to the other patrons.
The precious thing babbles out some typical baby-jargon. It's enough to draw out a chuckle from the cowboy, resting his chin in his cybernetic palm as he enjoys this small interaction. He'd have made a good dad, he thinks to himself—a thought that makes him wistful for some unknown reason.
He continues to make faces across the room while he waits for his order, laughing along with the sounds of incomprehensible giggles and sputtering. And then—then—an oddly familiar figure stands up to scoop the baby into their arms. A curious glance is shot Cassidy's way, and he almost forgets how to breathe.
It seems like you're still a fan of this diner's coffee.
