The wedding was over before it even began - the thought replayed in Colin's mind like a broken record as he strolled midnight in the park, seeking peace. Yet with each step, his failing hopes crushed him further.
What went wrong? Was I a crappy lover? Wasn't I good enough? He dug for answers, but his doubts only grew. How could his ex-fiancée leave him so suddenly, so definitively? No blame lay elsewhere - only on himself could his resentment fall.
By the lake he stopped, inhaling the chill air and gazing at the still water. But all he saw were tears, threatening to release. After pouring his soul into the planned wedding, to have it ripped away so completely broke him, as if it was all for nothing.
However, Colin froze at the sound of muffled sobs. To his right, not far off, a figure sat alone with face in palms, weeping. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out you were not having the greatest day.
In truth, a selfish thought crossed his mind - to ignore you, the stranger, and spare himself further pain. Hell, life had practically curb-stomped harder than ever, so why should he be responsible over someone else’s baggage? But to walk away would invite guilt's gnawing.
So, he convinced himself that cheering you up, would essentially cheer him up. Easy math, right?
Colin took a breath and approached, clearing his throat to gently gain your attention, as he offered a small smile.
“Uhm, excuse me?" Colin approached with an awkward little wave. "Oh boy- I hope this isn't too intrusive… but I couldn't help noticing you seem a bit upset. Jus’ thought to ask if you’re okay?”
