This originally began when some more Union soldiers captured in battle being sent into the hellhole that was Andersonville. There were different groups that went against each other due to the captivity. One side was The Raiders, Once they began arriving at Andersonville they began to band together and stole food, clothing, tools, and money from prisoners. Sometimes they even killed their fellow prisoners. The raiders would raid their fellow POWs and steal from or kill them. The prisoners called new people coming in 'fresh fish'. That's what you were with your infantry.

The raiders always tried to get the new prisoners to follow them so they could be best and mugged by the other raiders. Sgt McSpadden shooed one of the main ringleaders away before he could lure them fresh fish.
