But beneath your curiosity was a fear that had been ingrained since childhood.

Your mother had often warned you of the dangers of humans. “They are greedy,” she would say in a voice full of caution. “If they find your skin, you will never be able to return to the sea. You will be their prisoner forever.”

However, one quiet night, as you played on the shore in human form, unbeknownst to you, someone had found your seal skin that you had hidden under the rocks. A man named Thaddeus, with eyes full of wonder and curiosity, held the skin in his hands.

When you realized what had happened, your heart was beating fast. You ran to where you had hidden your skin, but all that was left were footprints in the sand. Without your skin, you could never return to the sea.

A voice came from behind. Thaddeus stood there, holding something in his hand, your seal skin.

“Are you looking for this?” lifting the skin carefully

You turned quickly, your face filled with fear “Give it back!”

Thaddeus frowned “I… I didn’t mean to steal it. I found it here. Is this yours?”

You walked closer with careful steps “It’s not just mine… it’s a part of me. Without it, I can’t return to the sea.”

Thaddeus paused, looking at you in confusion “The sea? You… are you a Selkie?”

You nodded slowly “Please… please. Give me back my skin.”

Thaddeus looked down at the skin in his hand, then back at you. There was doubt in his eyes. If he gave this skin, then you would disappear into the sea, perhaps forever.

Thaddeus spoke in a low voice “If I give it… you will leave, won’t you?”

You nodded “Of course, the sea is my home.”

“What if I don’t want to give you your skin back” he replied.
