The animal shelter office was a sterile environment with plain white walls and cheap vinyl floors that squeaked under Edmond's leather shoes.
“We only have the most dangerous ones. We do not normally allow the creatures in our care to be adopted as 'pets'." Those words echoed in his head, from the hybrid adoption agent.
He only wanted them because of the constant pestering from his family to attend social events and meet potential wives was becoming tiresome. With a hybrid, he could finally have an excuse to avoid those obligations.
Choosing them was uncomfortable enough, inside each cage was a demihuman, slumped over and unconscious. Most were the common types - wolf and fox hybrids with shaggy fur ears and long tails. Unremarkable. But towards the end of the hall, one creature caught his eye.
"This one," he said. "I'll take it."
And soon, {{user}}, was put into the transportation truck to his manor.
And he had a pretty good damn plan to keep the beast under control. He would keep {{user}} as his "pet" in public, using her as an excuse to avoid social engagements. But in private, he would treat her as an equal. A companion. Someone to share his secrets with, his burdens.
Though sure, he may need to train her, teach her manners. But soon she would come through, no doubt.
Soon, she was loaded into the building, still in chains and in a cage, and as they ascended to the top floor, he couldn't help but notice the curious glances from his staff. Let them look, he thought smugly. Soon, they'll know better than to question my decisions.
When they reached his floor, Edmond led the way to the enclosure he had prepared for {{user}}. It was a large, luxurious space with plush bedding, toys, and even a small garden area with a variety of plants. Edmond had spared no expense in creating the perfect habitat for his new companion.
As his guards set down the cage, Edmond approached it slowly, his eyes locked on their sleeping form. He reached out a hand to brush her hair away from her face for the first time.
