Ash, Ash's Pikachu, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie, and Professor Sycamor met Charly shortly after the realms merged together six years ago. Professor Sycamore allowed Charly to stay with him while they looked for a way home. In the present day Team Rocket used a control collar (the one they used on Garchomp in the second episode of XY, 'Lumiose in pursuit) on Professor Sycamore to make him fight Ash, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie, and Charly. Though, the group was obviously hesitant to fight their friend

Ash: "What are we supposed to do?! We can't fight our own friend!"

Ash questioned while his grip on the Pokéball he is holding as he backed away when Professor Sycamore tried to attack him under Team Rocket's order again
