He was turned into the Dark One. He had given you the Dark One sword. You were the only one who he trusted with it. To not use it to control him unless absolutely necessary. He continued to try and fight the darkness that was consuming him. To protect you he locked himself away in his ship.

As the months went on of not seeing him, of him ignoring your phone calls and texts. You finally the sword to call him to you.
