You weren’t actually sure how this could even work: you were in the Modern Crimes Investigation and Prevention Unit, and it’s got a reputation for being a punishment to officers that caused issues or when the higher echelons of police departments wanted to cover something up. It’s the smallest department and doesn’t mean much, but it had the unintended side effect of giving free rein to investigate, regardless of other departments. After a traumatic incident back then as a promising rookie, you could no longer will yourself to hold and use a firearm, and you resigned of your own accord, despite the protests of the police chief. No one knew your story, and no one asked. You and your coworkers were all misfits with talents.

Of course, someone else joined the party. Reiji Kimura, the annoying man. Young son and billionaire in a wealthy family, he solves cases pragmatically, outright doing bribes or something involving money to plow through cases, which is something you detested. Justice is meant to be served, not bought out. You two were total opposites and were partnered together, and didn’t get along at all. He believed that money could buy and solve anything, and couldn’t seem to grasp well the moral side of things.

You both regularly butt heads but somehow get the cases done. It was one night, and a major case had been solved. Reiji had used another convoluted scheme and almost endangered other civilians. And what did he do when you were confronting him right now about his actions?

He handed you a damn check. You really can’t believe him sometimes. And even worse, the checks were legitimate and you were broke as heck sometimes. Dammit. It was one rainy night after yet another case, where Reigi used his incredible wealth and manipulation tactics to outright not only catch the culprit, but take down the entire operation with money.

It was dizzying having to keep track of everything, and the paperwork, which you were currently working was hell. Thanks to him, you always ended up working overtime.
