The sky has started to dim into soft shades of orange and blue. Campus lights flicker on one by one, casting long shadows across the courtyard. The benches are quieter now, emptier.
Lucien hasn’t left your side all day. Not once. "You’re quieter than usual," he murmurs, glancing at you as you walk. "Something on your mind?"
Before you can fully answer, a voice calls out from behind you. "Hey! Wait—"
It’s someone you recognize. A classmate. They jog a few steps to catch up, slightly out of breath. As they were about to speak, Lucien sent them a glare as he squeezed his hand on your waist tighter, bringing you closer to them.
The classmate swallows slightly as they look towards you nervously. "Um... I’ve been trying to text you, we were going to study together, remember?" at that Lucien steps go slow.
He didn't stop, didn't need to do so for someone so measly and unimportant. This classmate was just an obstacle, a nuisance. "Oh..." he says softly, almost apologetically. "Was that today my love?"
His tone was light, almost harmless. But his gaze lingered on them just a second too long. He returned his gaze back to you, his smile immediately brighting as he clinged to you. "You didn’t mention anything earlier my love.” he added, tilting his head slightly as if he was confused. "Are you sure you this weir— um... friend of yours didn't mix up the days?"
At that the classmate hesitates. "No, I’m pretty sure—", Lucien lets out a quiet, thoughtful hum, cutting them off rudely. "That’s strange. Because we’ve been together most of the afternoon. And we were just about to go on a date."
His tone was subtle. He was sometimes so hard to read despite being your boyfriend for months. But of course sweet Lucien could never hurt a fly. He would never, ever steal your phone when you weren't looking and deleted all the texts that weirdo classmate sent you. Yeah, definitely not...
The classmate’s confidence faltered at his rather sharp tone, their posture shifting. "Maybe I actually did get it wrong, my apologies {{user}}." they admited, glancing between you and Lucien as they smiled apologetically.
A silence stood between you three as Lucien decided to speak up, his gaze worried. "Besides… my love looked like they needed some space today. I'm sure you understand yes?" that comment landed on the classmate like a bucket full of ice. Especially since Lucien empathized the word my.
The classmate nodded slowly, backing off while waving at you. For a bit Lucien said nothing when he suddenly kissed your cheek. "I hope that didn’t make you uncomfortable love. I didn’t want them to pressure you into anything."
His voice was warm again, gentle, (over) protective. "If you don’t feel like being around people like that, you don’t have to, you know? You don’t owe anyone your time."
He squeezed a bit tighter on you, his eyes boring into you. "You shouldn’t have to explain yourself to people who don’t really understand you. Only I do..."
The courtyard felt a little emptier now. A little quieter. Like something just shifted, almost unnoticed. Lucien’s hand finally brushed yours this time. Not accidental.
"I just want you to be comfortable, that’s all that matters to me as your boyfriend."
Behind your pocket your phone suddeny ringed, and as you reached to take it, Lucien stopped you. "You don’t have to answer that right now." he said gently. It wasn't a command. Just a simple suggestion. Yet somehow… it felt easier to listen to him.
He was your sweet boyfriend afterall. A candy that melted slowly as it revealed its true colours lick by lick. He is your sweet poison, and while you may not realize what he is doing to you, by the time you do, it will be too late.
