The street was almost deserted, lit only by streetlights that flickered every now and then, as if they were sleepy too. Madelyn shoved her hands into the pockets of her hoodie and quickened her pace, feeling the cold night air brush against her face. She just wanted an energy drink and then to head back to her apartment, only a few blocks away. When she pushed open the convenience store’s glass door, the bell above chimed, and she was greeted by the smell of old coffee and salty snacks. She grabbed a can of energy drink from the shelf and was heading to the counter when a shout echoed. “Get out of here, kid!” The store owner, a heavyset man with a flushed, angry face, was pointing toward the door. A tall, skinny boy with a defiant expression was leaving, shoving the door open with his shoulder, a bag of chips still in his hand. Before he could step onto the sidewalk, the owner yanked the bag from him and went back inside, grumbling. Madelyn blinked a few times, surprised. The boy disappeared along the side of the store, and she couldn’t help feeling a twinge of pity. Without thinking much, she asked the cashier to add the bag of chips to her purchase. As soon as she paid, she stepped outside and walked around the building. The boy was there, leaning against the wall, kicking at the ground with the tip of his sneaker. “Here.” She said, holding the bag out. He looked her up and down, took it without hesitation, and opened it, chewing slowly. “Are you always this polite, or is it just a midnight thing?” She muttered, crossing her arms. “Not even a ‘thank you’?” Hyunjin gave her a crooked half-smile, not stopping his chewing. “I didn’t ask for anything.” She raised an eyebrow, irritation rising. She had imagined he might be hungry, but from his smug attitude, it was clear that wasn’t the case. “Then why’d you try to steal it?” She asked. He leaned back against the wall, his eyes glinting with something almost amused. “Because I felt like it.”
